Quizzes: Basic

Follow these steps to set up a new quiz in Carmen. For best results, work through the steps in order. For information on advanced Quizzes features, see Quizzes: Overview and follow the links for step-by-step instructions. You can also view a video tutorial on this topic.

To begin, log in to Carmen and go to a Course Home page.

STEP 1: Create Questions in the Question Library

Click Quizzes > question library Question Library to add questions to the Question Library so you can retrieve them as needed.

You can create questions within a quiz itself rather than in the Question Library. Creating them in the Question Library gives you more flexibility with how you use questions, including letting you randomize questions in a quiz.

1. Choose Question from the Create New drop-down menu, and then click Go.

2. Choose a question type and click Go.

For details on question types and setting up questions in the Question Library, see Understanding Question Types and Information Items.

3. Create questions. Details vary by question type (see Understanding Question Types and Information Items for links to detailed instructions), but set up for most types includes:

4. Click Preview to view your question as it will appear during use and grading. Click Save to save the question and return to the main page, Save and Copy to save the question and create a new question of the same type and that retains the copied properties, or click Save and New to continue creating questions of the same type.

5. Repeat as needed to create a question bank.

See Importing Questions for instructions on how to import questions.

STEP 2: Set Up Quiz

Instructors often have less control of the setting and circumstances under which students take online quizzes than for in-class quizzes. See Quizzes: Security Tips for ways to increase security on online quizzes to make them more like in-class quizzes.

On the Manage Quizzes page, you can use the 'Quick Edit' tool to make one or more quizzes active or inactive, change the category they associated with, and change the number of times students can attempt a quiz. To use Quick Edit, click the box next to the quiz name, then click the editQuick Edit Quizzes icon at the top of the list.

Set Up Properties

Click Quizzes >new quizNew Quiz.

When you click New Quiz, Carmen begins at the Properties tab. Once you have named and saved your quiz on this tab, you can work in each tab in whatever order you prefer.  These instructions will move from left to right across the list of tabs. Tabs that are only used for advanced quizzing options will not be described in this “Basic” section.

1. Name the Quiz.

2. Optionally, select a Category to link the quiz to, thus allowing quizzes to be grouped by category on the quiz list page.

2. Select a Grade Item to link the quiz to -- the Grade Items you've previously created will be in the drop-down menu. (We encourage users to create all Grade Items within the Gradebook before linking them to a Quiz. For more info on creating Grade Items, see Create Grade Items.) For information on aligning points available between Quizzes and Gradebook, see Max Points for Tools Linking to the Gradebook.

Although it is optional, linking a quiz to a Grade Item allows Carmen to auto-export quiz grades to the Gradebook. For this option, check allow automatic export to grades.

3. Select allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion so Carmen will grade quizzes as soon as they are completed. Note that long-answer questions will be scored as 0 until they are manually graded.

If allow attempt score... is not enabled, you must set attempts as marked in the 'Grade Quiz' page in order for the Gradebook to be populated with attempt scores.

4. Select optional advanced properties, such as allowing hints, receiving a notification email once a student has completed the quiz, and security properties, such as disabling the right-click feature and paging feature.

5. Expand the Messages menu to enter a question description or introduction to the quiz. Be sure to switch the radio button from Off to On if you want to use the description or introduction..

6. Expand the Page header/footer menu to enter a header and/or a footer.  Be sure to switch the radio button from Off to On if you want to use the header or footer.

4. Click Save Quiz.

Set Up Quiz Restrictions

1. Select Active in the Status box to make a quiz visible to students.

2. If you want the quiz to be visible but only available for student to take for a certain period of time, click the boxes next to Has start date and Has end date, and enter the dates and times of availability.

3. If needed, attach Additional Release Conditions, such as requiring students to view a certain content topic before viewing the quiz. See Release Conditions for more information.

4. If desired, select Security Options related to using the Respondus LockDown Broswer (see Using Respondus LockDown Browser for more details):

5. Enter optional Advanced Restrictions that relate to Quiz security, such as having students or a proctor enter a password to begin the quiz, or entering an IP address so students must take the quiz at a particular lab, for example. See Setting Up Quiz Restrictions for more information.

6. Adjust options related to Timing:

7. Click Add Special Access under Advanced Availability to override availability and timing settings for specific students, such as those working with Disability Services or those students who'll be taking the quiz outside of any specified time limits you've set. For more information on setting Special Access conditions, see Setting Up Quiz Restrictions.

8. Click Save Quiz.

Set Up Quiz Attempts

1. Select the number of Attempts Allowed for quiz-takers.

2. For quizzes with multiple attempts, select a method of Overall Grade Calculation.

3. Click Save Quiz.

Set Up Submission Views

Default View

1. The Default View will be displayed to students upon quiz completion if you do not add an additional view. The Default View displays the date the student submitted the quiz, does not display the quiz questions, and does not display the quiz statistics.

2. Click the Default View link to change the default settings.

3. Enter a custom message to display to students after finishing quiz. The default message is "Your quiz has been submitted successfully."

4. Under Show Questions, make appropriate choices as to what questions/responses to reveal after a quiz is taken. Click show help Show Help for an explanation of each choice.

Retain default of "No" under Show Questions for a security level closer to an in-class exam. You can still choose to display Statistics. You need to have previously checked allow attempt score to be seen upon completion (under the Properties tab) in order for the Show Answer choices to be meaningful.

5. Click the box next to Score so students can see their grade immediately upon quiz completion (note that they will only see the points for questions that can be auto-graded; long-answer questions cannot be auto-graded).

6. Click the appropriate boxes next to Statistics to allow students to see class average and score distribution.

7. Click Save View when you are done.

Additional Views

Click Add Additional View to create a more than one submission view.  For instance, you might leave the Default View unchanged but create an additional view that reveals more information if students return to the Submission area after the quiz has closed.

The options are the same as described above, though you can set the days/time when the additional view becomes available to students.  Depending on the number of attempts you allow, you may also have additional options for releasing Submission Views based on student performance.

Set Up Questions and Layout

1. Click Add/Edit Question to add or remove quiz questions or sections.

2. Click the Import button to import questions from your Question Library.

3. Place questions in your quiz

Option 1: On the Import page, choose Question Library for the Source Collection. Choose Collection Root as the Source Selection to show all questions and sections in your Question Library, or choose a specific section to narrow your options. Check the box next to each question to import.

Option 2: Have Carmen display a randomized set of questions from your Question Library.  See Quizzes: Creating Sections and Random Sections for instructions.

Option 3: To create new questions within a quiz, click Add/Edit Question, choose Question from the Create New menu, and click Go. Then, create new questions as in the Question Library. (See Question Library: Add Questions for details.)

4. Click Save.

5. To adjust the points values of questions or to create Bonus Questions, click the Edit Values button and modify points or check boxes in the Bonus column. Click Save..

6. If you have more than 10 questions in your quiz, use the Questions per Page area to divide your quiz into 2 or more pages.  The quiz will load faster for students and each page change will force Carmen to save any unsaved answers.

STEP 3: Grade Quizzes Manually, if Necessary

If a quiz is auto-graded and the scores are sent to Gradebook, you do not have to grade quizzes. Some cases under which you might want to manually grade your quiz include:

Click Grade Quiz Grade Quiz to manually grade quizzes.

1. You can either Grade by Attempts or Grade by Questions. Click the appropriate tab after making your choice. See Grading Quizzes Manually, if Necessary.

To Grade an Attempt for an individual student, use either the Users tab or the Attempts tab.

1. Click on the individual's quiz attempt you wish to grade. The student's entire quiz is displayed, including question, the student's answers and the correct answers. Questions answered correctly by the student will appear with a correct Correct Response; questions not answered correctly will display a incorrect Incorrect Response for the student's answer and a correct answer Correct Answer for the correct choice(s).

2. You can leave overall feedback in the Attempts Comments textbox, or feedback on individual questions in the Add Feedback textbox below the question.

3. To change the score for an auto-graded question, enter a new value in the Score textbox.  Enter any desired feedback.

Grading by Question allows you to change grades for all users at once.

Click the Questions tab to view responses broken down by question. Click on a question title to view statistics on and/or re-grade that question. If you have more than one 1 version of the question, you will see responses to each version. Click the Grade Quiz Grade Icon to change the grade for every student who took that version of the question.

Making any change to a question after students start taking a quiz will result in two versions of the question.  This is true even if your change is not substantive (ie, you corrected a typo).  If your change affects how the quiz is auto-graded (ie, you changed which answer is correct), Carmen will not automatically “regrade” attempts that have already been submitted.  You will need to make the correction yourself for students who took the first version.
